訃報。

ブルーズを世界的に広めた第一人者、B.B.キングが2015年5月14日（木）太平洋時間午後9時40分（日本時間15日午後1時40分）、ラスヴェガスの自宅で死去した。89歳だった。

キングは4月末に体調を崩し、5月頭から自宅でターミナル・ケアを受けていた。

ブルーズ・ギターを黒人世界のものから、白人も含めた世界のものに広めた功労者。キングの影響を受けたギタリストも、エリック・クラプトンを始め多数に上る。死の直前までライヴ活動を積極的に行い、生涯現役を貫き通した。

各界から膨大な追悼コメントが寄せられている。

This morning, I come to you all with a heavy heart.

BB King was the greatest guy I ever met. The tone he got out of that guitar, the way he shook his left wrist, the way he squeezed the strings... man, he came out with that and it was all new to the whole guitar playin' world. He could play so smooth, he didn't have to put on a show. The way BB did it is the way we all do it now. He was my best friend and father to us all.

I'll miss you, B. I love you and I promise I will keep these damn Blues alive. Rest well.

I'm so glad to have been able to have played in the house band at his club, opened for him many times while touring over the years and was turned on to his music at an early age. He shaped the blues and popular music landscape for decades. The world lost an important ambassador tonight. THE KING OF THE BLUES, Mr. B.B. King. This is from one of my favorite albums of his where he recorded the great tunes of Louis Jordan's. Enjoy, and say a great big thank you to this great man!!

評伝。

B.B.キングは本名ライリー・B・キング、1925年（大正14年）9月16日、ミシシッピー州イッタ・ベナ生まれ。近くのインディアノーラを育った地とする。4歳の時母が家を出てしまったため、その母の母（祖母）によって育てられた。当初はゴスペルを歌っていたが、12歳でギターを手にし、以後ギターの腕をあげていく。

1940年代後期にラジオDJを担当。これが人気となった。この時のラジオのDJネームがメンフィスのビール・ストリートのブルーズ・ボーイというもので、これが短くなってブルーズ・ボーイ・キングとなった。

1949年からレコードをリリース。1952年にはビルボードのリズム＆ブルーズ・チャートで「３オ・クロック・ブルーズ」が1位になり、ブルーズシーンで有名になった。

1970年の「ザ・スリル・イズ・ゴーン」はポップ部門でも大ヒット。グラミー賞ベストR&B男性部門を獲得。1970年代以降は、コンスタントにツアー、レコーディングとつづけ、常に一線で活躍した。来日も多数。エリック・クラプトンを始めとする多くのアーティストとの共演も実現し、若手アーティストたちからも慕われた。グラミーはその後も多数受賞。1987年にはライフタイム・アチーヴメント賞も受賞。

2012年2月21日には、ホワイトハウスでオバマ大統領の前で「スイート・ホーム・シカゴ」をオバマ氏と歌った。

2014年の後半のツアーを体調不良でキャンセル。高血圧と糖尿病で2015年5月1日にはラスヴェガスの自宅でターミナル・ケア(終末医療)を受けていることを明らかにしていた。

B.B.キングは好きなシンガーはフランク・シナトラと言ってはばからない。寝るときにはシナトラの『イン・ザ・ウィー・スモール・ハワーズ』をかけている、という。キングは、シナトラは黒人アーティストを白人オーディエンスに紹介し、チャンスを与えてくれたことに感謝している。シナトラは、キングを1960年代にラスヴェガスのシナトラのクラブに出演させた。

また、B.B.キング・ブルーズ・クラブというライヴを見せられるレストランも経営している。

B.B.キングは1971年3月、大手町産経ホールで初来日。この模様はライヴ盤になっている。以後来日多数。1999年2月のブルーノートが最後の来日か？　(要確認＝どなたかこの後の来日履歴をご存じのかたはお知らせください)
