ロイの盟友でもあるベース奏者、マーカス・ミラーが、ロイの思い出を2018年11月5日、フェイスブックに書いています。とてもいい内容でちょっと感動したので、マーカス本人の許可を取り、訳したのでご紹介します。マーカスが同ポストにユーチューブ音源を貼っていたので、それを聴きながらお読みください。

この曲は1941年にジミー・ドーシーとポール・マデイラによって書かれたスタンダード。ジミー・ドーシー・オーケストラのものが1942年にヒットし、その後、多数のカヴァーが録音された。タイトルは、「君がいてくれて嬉しいよ」といった意味。

「イスタンブールの夜は更けて」マーカス・ミラー著

ジャム・セッション。

ロイ・ハーグローヴと一緒にプレイしたあまたのアフター・アワー・ジャム・セッションの中でも、とてもよく覚えているのは、一番最初にやったものだ。1994年、トルコのイスタンブールだった。

ロイも僕もイスタンブールは初めてだった。夜、ジャズ・フェスティヴァルで演奏し、その後、ナイトクラブでちょっとしたジャム・セッションをした。両者のバンド・メンバーがそこにいて、お互い初対面だった。

ミュージシャン同士のヴァイブは最高で、（そのジャム・セッションを）止めることは到底できなかった。

クラブにいた人たちはその演奏を聴き、踊り、狂喜乱舞していた。アメリカからのミュージシャンたちが一緒にヴァイブしているのを楽しんでいた。ビバップからヒップホップまでなんでもやった。ロイは何曲もラップをしていた。確か、彼がジョン・コルトレーンの曲をやった直後、マイケル・ジャクソンの「ロック・ウィズ・ユー」をやってくれと僕たちのバンドに言ったと思う。

彼が、音楽のスタイルに関係なく、あらゆる良い音楽（グッド・ミュージック）にのめりこんでいたのは明らかだった。

午前4時半頃、夜は更けてもはややる曲もなくなり、マシンガンを持ったトルコ警官隊が通りにいる中、ホテルまで歩いて帰った。警官たちは僕たちにうなずいていた。彼らはクラブから漏れ流てくる音楽を聴いていて、彼らも気に入っていたのだ。

ロイの音楽は、それに触れた者すべてを喜ばせる。彼はアルマーニのスーツに(ナイキの)ジョーダンのスニーカーが似合う唯一の奴なんだ。

みんな寂しいよ、ブラザー。

Night On Istanbul by Marcus Miller

Of all the countless after-hours jam sessions that I played with Roy Hargrove, the one I remember the clearest was the very first one we did together. It was in 1994 in Istanbul, Turkey.

It was the first time there for both of us. We played the jazz festival in the early evening then met for a short jam session at a late night club. Both of our bands were there, meeting each other for the first time.

The vibe between the musicians was so beautiful, we couldn't stop.

The people in the club were listening and dancing and shouting; enjoying the experience of these musicians from the states vibin together.. We played everything from be-bop to hip-hop - Roy rapped on a bunch of songs. I think he may have even insisted we play "I Wanna Rock With You" by Michael Jackson, right after a John Coltrane tune!

It was clear that he was ALL about the music - good music - no matter the style.

When there were no more notes to play (around 4:30 am) we walked back to the hotel, past the Turkish police in the streets with the machine guns. Their head-nods let us know the music from the club must have made its way into the streets for them to hear.

And they dug it...

Roy's music blessed every ear it touched.

And he was the ONLY cat who could rock high-top Jordan's with an Armani suit!
