意味。

昨日の『ソウル・ブレンズ』でハニー・コーンの「ワン・モンキー・ドント・ストップ・ノー・ショー」がかかった。1972年、女性トリオ、ハニー・コーンの大ヒットだ。前々からこの曲のタイトルの意味がわからなかったので、DJマーヴィンに「これってどういう意味？」と尋ねた。すると、マーヴィンも「ねえ、よくわかんないよ」との答え。これには僕もびっくり。

マーヴィンの解説では、直訳的には「一匹のサルは、ショーを止めない」だから、「ショー・マスト・ゴー・オン（ショーはいずれにせよ、続いていく）」といった意味だと言う。ちなみに、Don’t と　No　と二重否定になっているが、これはブラック独特の言い回しで、二重否定されていても、文章全体は否定の意味になる。Ain’t No Mountain～(～の山はない)などと同じ。One Monkey Don’t (Any) Stop Show「サルが一匹くらいいなくても、ショーは止まらない」という意味だ。

マーヴィンにこのフレーズは当時流行っていたフレーズなのかときくと、「いや、きいたことはない。別に流行っていたわけではないと思う」という。ただ「この曲は、何かメッセージがあるような気がする」とも。「でも、そのあたりがよくわからない、吉岡さんに聞こうと思った(笑)」と言われても、僕がわかるわけないじゃない。ブラザーのマーヴィンがわからないものを…。(笑)　

しかし、そこで、このハニー・コーンは、ホットワックス／インヴィクタス・レコードからでてきたアーティストだということ。そのホットワックス／インヴィクタスは、デトロイトのモータウン・レコードにいて数々のヒット曲を送り出した超強力ソングライター・チーム、ホランド・ドジャー・ホランドがベリー・ゴーディーと喧嘩別れしてモータウンを辞め、自力で設立したレコード会社だ、ということをマーヴィンに説明した。

するとマーヴィンが「ああ、じゃあ、このワン・モンキーは（モータウン社長の）ベリー・ゴーディーのことじゃない？」と推理を働かせた。つまり、「ベリーがいなくても、この業界は続いていくよ」「ベリーなしでも、僕らはやっていけるよ」というメッセージだというのだ。

この映像を見てもわかるが、これを書いたのは同じホットワックス／インヴィクタス所属のR&Bグループ、１００プルーフのリーダー的存在のジェネラル・ジョンソン。

歌詞を読むと「一匹のサルはショーを止めることはできない。もしあなたが私の愛を必要としないなら、別れましょう」「成功で頭が一杯になったのかしら。でも、オバカさん、その成功の源は私だってわからないの？　かつてと違うあなたなら、もう私の人生から出て行って。あなたのことは好きだけど、あなたなしでやっていけるわ。ショーは続かなければならないから」といった意味。

曲を書いたのはホランド・ドジャー・ホランドではないが、確かに彼らの意を汲んで、こういう歌詞になったということは十分に考えられる。「一匹のサルがベリー・ゴーディー」というわけだ。ベリーとホランドたちは、印税などお金のことでもめた。自分たちが正当な報酬を得ていないと思い、結局、モータウンを辞めた。訴訟にもなったので、相当意見が対立していた。ベリーに頭にきて、「お前なんかいなくたって、俺たちはやっていけるぞ」という意味を含めて、この曲を出して、ヒットさせたとしたら、これはこれでおもしろい。

調査。

さらに、この「ワン・モンキー」について調べると、いろいろと出てきた。やはり、このフレーズはブラックの間でよく使われていたフレーズらしく、ハニー・コーンのヴァージョンも、元々黒人シンガー、ビッグ・メイベルが録音していた曲を元にして作ったものだという。

ビッグ・メイベルのものはこれ。1954年に録音されたが、ヒットには至っていない。

この歌詞を読むと、ハニー・コーンのものと大筋のストーリーは似ている。

ジョー・テックスは典型的なジェームス・ブラウン・フォロワー。ミスター・ブラウンを真似た歌唱で一時期人気を集めた。ミスター・ブラウンからは、「お前、いつまで俺のモノマネしてるんだ」とカツをいれられたとか、いれられなかったとか。

このほかにもあるのだが、極めつけはこれ。4人組だったグッディー・モブ。ここから、シンガーのシーロー・グリーンが独立し、3人組になった。ジャケットでは、シーローの座るべき椅子に小さなモンキーが座っている。「サルが一匹くらいいなくなっても、ショーは止まらない、ショーは続くよ」ということをはっきり言っている。

というわけで、このタイトルを持った曲はほかにもロック・グループなどにもあった。

ちょっとした話から、なかなかおもしろいことがわかって、楽しいひとときでした。
